Roy Hodgson Admits Crystal Palace Need to Be 'Careful' in Transfer Window With Derby Starlet Linked

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has admitted that the club need to be 'careful' in the upcoming January transfer window.

Palace currently sit 12th in the Premier League, having picked up 23 points from their opening 18 fixtures. Most recently, however, the Eagles fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Newcastle.

With the winter transfer window fast approaching, Palace boss Hodgson has now said that although the club need to be careful in January, they are still considering moves for long-term targets.

Speaking ahead of his side's upcoming Boxing Day clash with West Ham, Hodgson said, as quoted by Football.London: "We have to be careful. We had a situation earlier in the season where we had five good centre-backs for two positions.

"We’re going to have to get through this period. The players we were looking to improve our squad in the summer, they are still our targets."

One player the Londoners could look to sign in January is Derby County's Jayden Bogle. The Telegraph are reporting that the Eagles are considering making a move to land the player, while West Ham, Burnley and Brighton are also keen.

The Telegraph's report claims that they are looking to bring in a right-back in January and although Derby rate Bogle very highly, it notes that manager Phillip Cocu could be tempted by an offer in the upcoming window.

Elsewhere, it was recently reported that Palace had entered the race to sign Newcastle right-back Javi Manquillo, with West Ham and Brighton also interested in a January move. The player's contract is up at the end of the season and it is looking increasingly unlikely that the Magpies will offer him a new deal.

Palace defender Martin Kelly began the 2019/20 season at centre-back, but has since played the last seven league matches on the right side of the defence.
