Anger at late final-day fixture switch

Palace’s season-closing away clash at Charlton will now be played a day later, along with every other Premiership match that weekend.

All ten games have been shunted back to the Sunday so Sky can show the climax to the Premier League season live on TV.

Which begs the question: why on earth weren’t the games scheduled for the Sunday originally? Palace fans bought out every single ticket for the away end more than six weeks ago, on the understanding the game would be played on the Saturday afternoon. Having bought so far in advance, many Eagles fans may have already made other plans for the Sunday.

Charlton head honcho Peter Varney certainly isn’t happy. "This is an unacceptable and unconstitutional decision by the Premier League - one that is not fair on the clubs and, even more importantly, not fair on football's fans," Varney said in a statement on Charlton’s official site.

"The Premier League's own rules require that clubs are consulted on any such change and this has not happened. There is absolutely no need for the entire fixture programme to be switched to a Sunday with 4pm kick-offs.

"The requirements of television could quite easily be met without the entire fixture programme being moved and I understand and share the anger there will be from our supporters to this decision."

Palace’s match against Charlton at The Valley will now be played on Sunday May 15th at 4pm.
