Dowie keeps his feet on the ground

Iain Dowie has promised Palace fans the club will not go for broke in its mission to stay in the Premiership next season.

Eagles supporters will need no reminding of the disastrous consequences of our free-spending last season in the top league in 97/98.

The legacy of that brief sojourn in the upper echelon was a spell in administration and the near-collapse of the entire football club.

But Dowie says that will not happen this time around. "We're not going to go bananas now. We need to make sure we create a legacy that improves the club overall," he vowed. "We can't go from boom to bust. We'll use the money wisely to improve the playing side, but also leave a legacy to show we are a go-ahead club for years to come."

Those words will come as a relief to Palace fans for whom expensive failures such as Michele Padavano and Itzik Zohar are still a fresh memory.

Thankfully, purchases such as those are not top of the boss’s shopping list. "I want a young side that will take us forward," Dowie told the South London Press. "But any signings have to be the right ones. Their character is the key."
