Dwight Gayle opens up on Pulis exit

His decision to leave his post at Crystal Palace came only 48 hours before the Eagles Premier League opener away to Arsenal. Caretaker manager Keith Millen took charge of the squad and despite a heroic performance succumbed to a 2-1 defeat.

Since their Premier league opener chairman Steve Parish has held interviews for new candidates. Former Cardiff manager Malcky Mackay was favourite to succeed Pulis. However after a highly publicised enquiry into racist, sexist and homophobic text message the appointment was called off.

Meanwhile the Crystal Palace team welcomed the visit of West Ham to Selhurst Park in the second game of the season. Palace ran out 3-1 losers to the Hammers leaving the Eagles 3rd from botton without any points. Some fans pointed what was a poor peformance from the Eagles squad to the lack of leadership from the managerless club.

Crystal Palace faced Walsall next in the Capital One Cup and despite having no manager were able to record a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle, spoke to reporters after the game about his shock at the departure of Tony Pulis :

"I'd be lying if I said it hadn't because the team has been a bit confused as to what was happening but Keith has sorted us out and hopefully we can repay that faith by winning on Saturday (at Newcastle).

"With all that's going on off the pitch it's nice to get on the pitch and get a win and hopefully we can push on from it on Saturday and get three points.

"They are trying to sort stuff out but we need to concentrate on what's on the pitch and get the results."

"It's not been easy but you don't want to make excuses," he said.

"We needed that. We didn't perform against West Ham and it will give everyone a lift. Coming in on Thursday there will be a lot more smiles on the faces."

Crystal Palace now face Newcastle at the weekend and will be hoping to ignore the off-the-field drama to record their first points of the season.
