Erikkson sticks with AJ for England

Andy Johnson has been handed another chance to impress in an England shirt after bagging a spot in Sven Goran Eriksson’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

AJ keeps his place in the line-up, while established internationals Alan Smith and Darius Vassell are dropped for the crucial games against Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan.

There’s little chance of Johnson starting either match – with Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney both in strong form of late, Eriksson is sure to start with them.

But if the England boss wants to see what the top English goalscorer can really do (and not how he performs on the right wing), he could well be in line for a substitute appearance.

The match against Northen Ireland takes place on 26 March, with the Azerbaijan clash four days later on 30 March.
