Johnson aims for Owen's England spot

Andrew Johnson believes Michael Owen’s suspension against Wales can help him make an impact on the international scene.

AJ had to drop out of the squad for last night’s friendly against Denmark after suffering a hamstring problem.

But with Owen missing the upcoming qualifier against the Welsh, Johnson knows he’s got the chance to stake his claim for another call-up.

"Of course I am devastated not to be involved," Johnson told skysports.com. "Sven has shown great faith in me.

"Hopefully by the time he picks his next squad I should be on seven or eight goals.

"It's a tough job keeping your place in there when there is so much competition.

"But Michael Owen can't play in the next qualifier so hopefully if I keep banging the goals in I can get another chance."
