Johnson rumours gather ground

Star Palace striker Andrew Johnson continues to be heavily linked with a move away from the club, with both Manchester City and Spanish side Sevilla believed to be readying bids.

Johnson submitted a transfer request last month and is desperate to return to top-flight football to improve his chances of making next year’s England World Cup squad.

The 24-year-old was the top English goalscorer in the Premiership last season and, with the number of available strikers reduced by one after Liverpool snapped up Peter Crouch, Palace’s number eight has become an even more attractive acquisition.

City boss Stuart Pearce is flush with cash after selling Shaun Wright-Philips to Chelsea for £21m, and has made Johnson his primary target.

However, the Eastlands club will wait to see how any bid from Primera Liga side Sevilla progresses before putting forward their own offer.

Sevilla have been interested in Johnson for some time, although any bid is dependent on the sale of their Brazilian midfielder Julio Baptista.

With Crouch moving for £7m, any deal for Johnson would be expected to weigh in at around the same price.
