Palace are our main rivals – Curbishley

Charlton Athletic manager Alan Curbishley has claimed Palace are his side’s biggest local rivals, now the two sides both have a place in the Premiership.

The news will come as a surprise to most Eagles fans, who typically regard their fellow south-east Londoners with an air of indifference.

In fact, Charlton have traditionally struggled to establish a genuine rivalry with anyone. Near neighbours Millwall have a fiercer relationship with West Ham, while Palace reserve their fury for south-coast strugglers Brighton.

However Curbishley believes that with both Palace and Charlton breathing the rarified air of the Premiership, that’s all changed.

"When me and Steve Gritt came here, that's when we first realised the rivalry with Millwall and how strong it was - although we didn't like 'em much at West Ham either," Curbishley told Teamtalk.com.

"But I think it's probably Palace now with how things have gone recently and the days of renting at Selhurst. But I love derbies and I think the biggest games this season will be Palace home and away."

Former Eagles defender Hermann Hreidarsson added: "It's probably Palace now because Millwall are a division below.

"Our fans made it a very hostile atmosphere when we played them in the cup at The Valley, which was nice for us to play in."

Although not that nice, presumably, unless Hermann counts going down 2-1 to a ten-man Palace second-string a good thing.

But what do you think? Can Charlton seriously now be considered our main rivals? Have your say on Palace’s real grudge match in our big vote.
