Palace battered by midfield injury crisis

There is just one week to go before the new season kicks off, and Peter Taylor's midfield is falling apart around him.

Mark Kennedy is the latest to join the injury list, with the Irishman picking up a groin injury that is expected to rule him out beyond the opener at Southampton on August 11th.

He joins Carl Fletcher and Paul Ifill in the treatment room, with both missing the big kick-off having suffered hamstring injuries during last month's tour of Sweden.

Fletcher and Ifill would certainly have expected to start at St Mary's, meaning Taylor will be forced to dip into his reserve team squad before a ball has even been kicked.

"It's a bit of a blow to us," Taylor told the Streatham Guardian. "It means we've lost Fletcher, Paul Ifill and now Mark Kennedy, but if it gives someone else an opportunity then they have to take it."

But while the boss puts on a brave face, the injuries show just how threadbare his midfield has become.

Despite the close season departures of Jobi McAnuff, Michael Hughes and Tommy Black, not a single midfielder has arrived at the club.

New signing Jeff Hughes can play further up the park, but he is by trade a left-back. Only three players from last season's midfield are available - Ben Watson, Tom Soares and Stuart Green.

The result is that Taylor will be putting his faith in untested players such as Hughes and Dave Martin, and in kids such as Ryan Hall and James Dayton, right from the outset.
