Palace have joined Leeds and Spanish side Malaga in the race to sign Sunderland midfielder Sean Thornton, according to the player’s agent.

The 22-year-old is surplus to the requirements of the Wearside club after being told by boss Mick McCarthy he did not figure in his Premiership plans.

Thornton’s agent, Lee Payne, confirmed all three clubs had made contact with Sunderland about the player, but said discussions were still at an early stage.

''There is interest from Leeds and Palace but there has been nothing concrete as yet,'' Payne told skysports.com.

''We're just waiting now. They would be interested in signing Sean but we've left it now. They'd have to agree something with Sunderland first.

''I expect things to get going again in the next few weeks.''
