Palace have Clinton bid accepted

Clinton Morrison is set for a shock return to Selhurst Park after Palace had a £2m bid for the striker accepted by Birmingham City.

Republic of Ireland international Morrison left Selhurst Park in 2002 in a deal that saw £4.25m and Andrew Johson heading the other way.

The 26-year-old has never really settled at St Andrews and has made no secret of his desire for regular first-team football.

It appeared that would mean a move to Carrow Road after Norwich City had a £2m bid accepted last week, but Iain Dowie has now crashed the party with a bid of his own.

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce revealed both the Palace and Norwich bids are identical, meaning it is up to Morrison to decide where he wants to go.

"We have agreed a fee with Palace for Clinton," said Bruce.

"They have matched the offer from Norwich City and it is now down to the player."

Morrison was heavily linked with a return to Palace during the close season, as part of a deal that would have seen Johnson travel back to Birmingham.

However, Morrison rejected that idea out of hand, saying at the time: "There would be no way I would go back to somewhere I left to further my career in the first place. I wouldn't join Palace again, that's for sure."
