Palace sign Whelan

Having ditched attempts to bring in Marcus Stewart from Sunderland earlier this week, Eagles boss Trevor Francis quickly turned his attentions to the former Leeds and Coventry centre-forward.

Whelan has struggled to hold down a regular place at the Riverside this season and with the recent arrival of Michael Ricketts and Malcolm Christie found himself even further down the line for a first team place at Boro.
