Palace v Chelsea – Team news preview

Last updated : 23 August 2004 By Nik Taylor

Tuesday night sees the Sky cameras at Palace for the first time this season and the Eagles heading out for a no-lose game.

There’s not a pundit in the land that gives us a chance against the megastars of Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea, so if Palace take a hiding it will surprise no-one.

But the Eagles revel in the role of underdog and will have no fear of taking on Jose Mourinho’s title challengers.

Iain Dowie will be hoping Hungarian striker Sandor Torghelle can pass a late fitness test, with the forward set to replace Dougie Freedman in the starting line-up.

Meanwhile, Michael Hughes is poised to return to the first eleven, but Danny Butterfield and Neil Shipperley are still some way from full fitness.

And it remains to be seen whether Julian Speroni’s first-half ricket against Everton will cost him the number one jersey.

Chelsea have few injury problems, although Celestine Babayaro could come in for the doubtful Wayne Bridge. Damien Duff could make his first appearance of the season, after returning to full fitness.

Probable starting XI:
Speroni
Boyce Hudson Popovic Granville
Kolkka Hughes Hall Routledge
Torghelle Johnson
