Palace v Gillingham – Team news preview

Last updated : 27 February 2004 By Nik Taylor

Palace are likely to be missing two of their most influential players for the visit of Gillingham on Saturday.

Aki Riihilahti is definitely unavailable after aggravating his calf against Derby, and Andy Johnson is also expected to miss out as Palace look to bounce back from their first defeat since Boxing Day.

Aki has been in inspirational form in the middle of the park since the arrival of Iain Dowie at Palace. But he now faces around three weeks on the sidelines after suffering a torn calf muscle at Pride Park last week.

AJ’s injury is less severe, but is still expected to keep him out of the team. The striker twisted his ankle in the Derby match, and Dougie Freedman will probably be given the chance to press his claim for a regular first-team spot.

The good news for Palace is that Gillingham are in the midst of an injury crisis of their own. Notable absentees for the Gills include keeper Jason Brown, defenders Ian Cox and Chris Hope, midfielder Nyron Nosworthy and striker Darius Henderson.
