Pops set for new Palace deal

Defender Tony Popovic is keen to put pen to paper and commit his future to newly-promoted Palace.

Pops has been a rock in the middle of the Eagles defence this season, but he is now one of four first-team players out of contract.

However, Palace opened contract talks earlier this week and the Aussie defender has underlined his desire to stay at Selhurst Park and help the side battle it out with the top sides.

"For me I don't think it would have mattered whether we went up or not in terms of my contract," Popovic said. "I would like to have signed two or three months ago but the chairman wanted to leave it until the end of the season.

"I can't wait to face Thierry Henry and Ruud van Nistelrooy – I'm looking forward to being tested against the best."
