Powell expected to leave

Darren Powell is likely to leave Palace during the summer, following the signing of fellow centre-back Darren Ward from Millwall.

Powell struggled to break into the first team last season and with more competition arriving for his position, director of football Bob Dowie believes the 29-year-old will now seek to establish himself elsewhere.

The defender is currently out of contract, and Dowie feels he is unlikely to pen a new one – with Reading rumoured to be interested in taking him on.

"I think that Darren Powell, with the signing of Darren Ward, will not re-sign," Dowie told The Croydon Advertiser.

"I think he was very disappointed. I think he wanted to stay."

However, Dowie is hopeful both Dougie Freedman and Danny Granville – both out of contract this summer – will sign new deals to stay with the club.

"We are talking to the two of them," Dowie said. "We are hopeful of re-engaging Dougie and Danny."
