The former Millwall and Southampton player, 22, has made four appearances so far for the Eagles after arriving on an initial short-term deal in August.
Boss Neil Warnock has now given Smith another three months to prove he is worth a longer contract.
He is likely to be on the bench when Palace travel to Cardiff on Saturday.
