Southampton v Palace – Team news preview

Last updated : 02 November 2005 By Nik Taylor

Palace make the trip down to the south coast looking to shake off the disappointment of conceding an injury time equaliser at Crewe last Saturday.

That 93rd minute strike denied Dowie’s men a deserved victory, but perhaps even more damaging was the injury that forced off keeper Gabor Kiraly on the hour mark.

The Hungarian came off with what was believed to be a chest injury, although there have also been reports he was concussed.

Either way, Kiraly is rated as a doubt and cup hero Julian Speroni may fill his place between the sticks.

Elsewhere, Jobi McAnuff will be looking to displace Michael Hughes from the left-wing position in which the verteran has impressed in recent games. McAnuff is full recovered from the injury that kept him out against Liverpool and Crewe.

Garry Borrowdale is expected to come in for Danny Butterfield at right-back.

Southampton have some issues in defence, with Chris Baird and Martin Cranie expected to miss out. However, right-back Tomasz Hajto and midfielder Matthew Oakley could return for the Saints.

Former Eagle Darren Powell may also return to the Southampton team in place of Michael Svensson, who is making a gradual return from injury.

Probable Palace XI:

Speroni
Borrowdale Ward Hall Boyce
Reich Watson Soares Hughes
Morrison Freedman
