After the exertions of the regular reserves during Monday’s Pontins Cup win, a young and inexperienced Palace side took to the field on Wednesday night - and were promptly sent packing by Cambridge.

The vast bulk of the team were youngsters, with Curtis Fleming and Darren Powell the only survivors from the starting eleven in the cup game. Both are continuing their recoveries from injury, with Powell managing another 45 minutes of football here, and Fleming putting in an hour.

With so many changes made to the side, Palace struggled to find any fluency and never really looked like getting past the Cambridge second string.

The Eagles held Cambridge at bay until early in the second half, when the opening goal came. Shortly afterwards it was two, as 16-year-old keeper David Wilkinson was chipped. And with ten minutes to go, the scoreline became 3-0.

Palace Team: (4-4-2) David Wilkinson, Curtis Fleming (Conroy ’61), Cousins, Billy Sentance, Darren Powell (Gary Prigent ‘46), Courtney (Sam Togwell ’46), Aaron Fray, Gliddon, Snee, Dolan, Lachlan Cahill
