Walsall manager Colin Lee was left bitterly disappointed after his side's stalemate against struggling Crystal Palace at Bescot.

Walsall, who played the final eight minutes of the game with ten men after the dismissal of right-back Chris Baird for two bookings, had enough chances to have won comfortably.

Lee said: "I am disappointed that we did not win as we did create a number of good chances.

"But it was just one of those days when things would not go for us in front of goal.

"But we did manage to keep a clean sheet and I always like to do that." Palace's caretaker boss Kit Symons was full of praise for his side's battling display.

Palace have won just one of their last 15 league games but Symons said: "I was pleased with the way that we played and I felt we could have won the game.

"That was only our second clean sheet of the season and and that gives us something to build on." Rival goalkeepers James Walker and Thomas Myhre dominated proceedings in a fiercely contested opening period.

Norwegian international Myhre, who has just extended his loan spell at Palace from Sunderland, twice pulled off smart saves to prevent Walsall taking the lead.

After just nine minutes he stood his ground to beat away a close-range drive from Steve Corica after he had been picked out by a pass from Simon Osborn.

Myhre then frustrated Osborn for a second time in the 23rd minute by turning away a low angled drive from the Australian international midfielder.

Having managed to overcome the Walsall storm, Palace were then denied by the heroics of long-serving Walker.

The former Notts County keeper first dived low to his left to push out a powerfully struck 20-yard free-kick from Ben Watson six minutes before half-time.

Walker deflected the ball into the path of Palace striker Dougie Freedman who looked certain to score from six yards.

But Walker was able to recover in time to frustrate the former Wolves marksman.

Walsall laid siege to the Palace goal in the opening stages of the second-half, but struggled to really test Myhre who comfortably dealt with a shot from Paul Merson.

Merson also twice failed to hit the target from close range as Palace faced an uphill battle to break out of their own half.

Walsall's frustrations in front of goal were then perfectly summed up 12 minutes from time when Merson picked out Gary Birch at the far post only for the rookie striker to head wide from two yards.

Walsall were then forced to play the final eight minutes of the game with ten men after Baird was dismissed for collecting two yellow cards - both for fouls on Andy Johnson.
