Well, Crystal Palace fans, that was anticlimactic wasn't it? After exceeding expectations for the majority of the season, it looked as though Roy Hodgson's side had made serious progress this year and were on their way to their highest ever Premier League finish, but somewhere, somehow, things went very wrong.
Seven straight league defeats led to the Eagles picking up just one point out of a possible 24 from their final eight games of the season. Absolutely absurdly bad form.
It's a fickle sport and the disastrous form they finished the season in has cast huge doubts over the former England manager's future at the club - just a month after he was earning praise for his performances.
Here's a closer look at a season that looked so promising before the club nosedived into mid-table obscurity, with a final grade to go with it.
League Performance
Premier League - 14th
For a moment there it really looked like Palace were going to break into the Premier League's top 10. In fact, heading into November, the Eagles were occupying a Europa League place, with their early season form being highlighted by a 2-1 win away at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
Fast forward to January and - while they were no longer sitting among the league's elite within the top six - Hodgson's men were still sitting pretty comfortably in the top half of the Premier League, occupying ninth place. The club even embarked on a five game unbeaten run, picking up draws with Manchester City and Arsenal along the way. But it was just before the league was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic that Palace were at their best.
Four straight wins had Palace fans daring to dream. The club looked well on their way to securing their highest ever Premier League finish and Hodgson looked like an absolute genius.
Well...seven games and seven defeats later, Palace had dropped down to 14th and the optimism surrounding a possible top half finish was long gone. A draw with Tottenham on the final day of the season ended the year on a relatively positive note, but it's hard to deny the season was a disappointment.
Domestic Cup Performance
Carabao Cup - Second Round
A performance Palace fans will not look back fondly on, the club fell short at the first hurdle. A penalty shootout loss to League Two Colchester was one of the lower points of the side's season.
FA Cup - Third Round
Another disappointing cup campaign for the Eagles, Palace once again failed to make it past the opening round of a tournament. A 1-0 loss to struggling Championship side Derby County added to the embarrassment the club endured in the FA Cup.
Best Player
Honestly, there were very few real standout performers. There's an argument that can be made for either Jordan Ayew or Vicente Guaita being Palace's best player this season. Both players have been impressive, but we've got to give the nod to Ayew here.
Signed for just £2.5m, the 28-year-old led the line for the side and finished as the club's top scorer with nine goals in the Premier League. With no one else in the side scoring more than four goals all season, Ayew's goalscoring touch was vital.
Worst Player
While it may seem harsh at first glance, Max Meyer must be considered the worst player for Palace this season.
Expectations were high for the former Schalke star when he arrived at Selhurst Park last season, but after a less than impressive debut season in England, things have only gone from bad to worse.
With only 19 appearances to his name this season, Meyer has failed to ever really impressive Hodgson. A major disappointment considering his crippling £125,000 per week wages.
The Manager
It's been a bit of an up and down season for Hodgson, who was being praised just last month for how his side had overachieved. They were on the verge of their highest ever Premier League finish, but it all went wrong pretty quickly.
Following a disastrous run of seven straight defeats and one draw to end the season, many have now began to wonder whether or not he'll be even at the club next season.
Overall Grade: C
Yes it was a disappointing conclusion to what promised to be a positive season, but many expected Palace to face a real relegation battle following their sale of Aaron Wan-Bissaka last summer, so it wasn't that bad.
