Dowie backs AJ's England chances

Iain Dowie reckons star striker Andrew Johnson can still make the plane for Germany this summer – despite being left out of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s squad for yesterday’s friendly against Uruguay.

There are no more England friendlies left before Eriksson must name his World Cup squad on May 15, but Dowie thinks AJ has the quality to force his way ahead of both Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe.

"I don't think his chance has gone," Dowie said. "If he can keep scoring between now and the end of the season, I will make sure Sven is aware of him.

"I believe Andrew is one of the top four of five strikers in the country, and he is good enough to go to the World Cup."
